Abstract

The wireless industry has been living a revolution since the introduction of new smartphones in 2007 showed a new path for mobile phone utilization to consumers. During these last few years, the paradigm shifted from having a “voice” centric device to an “app” centric device. This shift has created considerable strain on the existing networks and has forced operators to rethink the way they offer their services. A major challenge faced has been the explosion of data traffic utilization, for which more efficient network technologies had to be developed and deployed – during the session we will review the key technologies developed and how they can help mitigate the problem. Coping with data growth, however, is only one piece of the puzzle that the operators are facing. With the rapid adoption of new technologies we need to find ways to operate our network more efficiently while at the same time satisfying customer demands for a good grade of service. In the final part of the presentation we will review Self Organizing Network mechanisms that help operators cope with multiple technologies at an optimum level, and new methods to that look at optimizing the data services End-to-end, considering not just the network, but the devices, operating systems and applications as equally important pieces of the equation.
