EE Professor Scott Hauck is the 25th UW EE faculty member to be elected an Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow. Hauck is honored for his contributions to Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based systems. FPGAs are chips that can be programmed and reprogrammed to implement complex digital logic.

“Scott is a dedicated member of our community who has tirelessly worked for the best of the departments,” said Department Chair Radha Poovendran. “He is also an outstanding educator.”

Hauck graduated from UW Computer Science & Engineering in 1995 and returned to UW in 1999 when he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering. Hauck’s FPGA research efforts have led to innovations in high-performance computing applications such as genomics and medical imaging, new architectures for more efficient electronics circuits, and software automation to help design the complex systems.

Hauck has been recognized for leadership in research, teaching, department service and mentoring of students, including the University-wide Distinguished Teaching Award. In June 2015, Hauck was also the first recipient of a new professorship, the Gaetano Borriello Professorship for Educational Excellence, created jointly by EE and CSE to commemorate the late Professor Gaetano Borriello. Mentored by Borriello while completing his Ph.D., Hauck was selected for the professorship for exemplifying many of Borriello’s ideals of educational excellence and for having a student-centered focus.

The title of IEEE Fellow is bestowed by the Board of Directors to professionals who have made remarkable contributions in their field. The number of fellows selected each year is less than 0.1% of the total voting membership of the organization.
