UW EE junior Megan Swanson will attend the Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research at Berkeley (SUPERB) this June. The Information Technology for Sustainability (ITS) component is a general theme for the program, which promotes research for societal good. This year’s main focus on “Collecting and Using Big Data for the Public Good” reflects the overall ITS theme.

The program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), is a challenging nine-week summer intensive. It’s designed to prepare students for graduate study. For Swanson, this supports her overall professional goal.

“After I graduate, I would like to get a Ph.D.,” Swanson said. “The SUPERB-ITS program is the next step to get me there. Currently, at the UW, I focus on embedded systems, and I would love to continue my research and education in embedded systems within computer and electrical engineering. For me, Berkeley would be a dream school.”

SUPERB-ITS students will work on ongoing research projects in information technology with faculty mentors and graduate students. Through the program, students are encouraged to explore options for graduate study, and they gain exposure to a large research-oriented department. Swanson will work with Berkeley Professor Claire Tomlin in the Hybrid Systems Laboratory.

“I am very excited to be able to work with Professor Tomlin,” Swanson said. “She is doing some amazing work in embedded systems, developing and investigating hybrid technologies.”
