The University of Washington (UW) Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) would like to thank Professor Bruce Darling for serving as Interim Department Chair during Winter Quarter 2020. Darling was preceded by outgoing Chair Radha Poovendran at the end of 2019, and succeeded by incoming Chair Eric Klavins, who began his tenure April 1, 2020.

“Bruce’s dedication to our department over the last months, and indeed, many years, humbles and inspires me. On behalf of our department, I’d like to sincerely thank him for his leadership.” – UW ECE incoming Chair, Eric Klavins

Darling brought years of valuable experience to his role as Interim Chair, having joined UW ECE as a professor in 1985 and served as Acting Chair during the 2003–2004 academic year. He also has held prominent roles in the department over the years, such as Graduate Program Coordinator and Associate Chair for Education.

Darling has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to engineering education, receiving the UW College of Engineering Faculty Award in Teaching in 2017. As a faculty advisor, Darling supported students as they launched an EcoCar to national competition, receiving a first place National Science Foundation (NSF) Award. He has also developed instructional curriculum in undergraduate electronics and introductory radio-frequency electronics, as well as launched laboratories, such as the first hands-on microfabrication laboratory at the UW in 1995.

“Rest assured that in the weeks ahead I will continue to work with Eric as the new ECE Chair to ensure a smooth transition. It is a pleasure to turn the department over to his caring and capable hands.” – UW ECE Interim Chair, Bruce Darling

Going forward, Darling will continue teaching and work in UW ECE Photonics and Nano Devices, where his research covers many different aspects of integrated sensor development and integrated circuit design, as well as novel optoelectronic devices, electronic materials, and processing techniques. He will also remain as Chair of ECE Space and Facilities.

With deep gratitude, we sincerely thank Bruce Darling for his outstanding service as UW ECE Interim Chair.
