Master’s & Ph.D.

The degree requirements for UW ECE Ph.D. students have been established by the UW Graduate School and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. The Ph.D. program generally takes 5–7 years to complete. Ph.D. students must identify a faculty adviser before the end of their first year in the program.

Students must complete a minimum of 90 credits, including the following:

  • 90 credits as a graduate student; at least 60 credits must be completed at the University of Washington.
  • EE 500 Seminar: 1 credit is required (4 maximum)
  • EE 599: 5 credits maximum may be applied
  • EE 800: 27 credits dissertation research over at least three quarters

Examinations

Three examinations are required for the Ph.D. program. Ph.D. students are expected to pass the qualifying exam by the end of their second year in the program and the general examination by the end of their third year in the program.
